1.    Discrimination in Health Care Program:

Evidence from all regions and states in Nigeria revealed that some health care professionals discriminate in healthcare provision against groups of patients i.e. women and those with increased health needs such as elderly people, people with learning disability and people living with HIV. Every woman, man, youth and child has the human right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, without discrimination of any kind. Enjoyment of the human right to health is vital to all aspects of a person's life and well-being, and is crucial to the realization of many other fundamental human rights and freedoms.

 

 

Program Objectives:

To ensure equal access to quality health care for all. This right applies to health care services and facilities including hospitals, clinics, community care access centers, long-term care facilities, home care and health care programs; advocate against discrimination on the basis of disability, the elderly, women, the poor etc., in the full and equal enjoyment of services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any private or public medical facility.

 

 

 

2. The Human Rights and Health Action AIDS Program:

 

The Human Rights and Health Action Aids Advocacy  Program mobilizes the health professionals, high school and college teachers, youth groups, community leader and government officials to support a broad-based AIDS strategy and advocate needed to combat the disease. NCGHHR is developing ways for medical doctors, public health officials, and the education sector in developing a sustained strategy on education on preventive measures and support to victims by advocating for the availability and provision of the much needed medication which are beyond their reach. 

The AIDS epidemic sub-Saharan Africa remains the most devastating crisis in the history of human health. More than 37 million people are living with HIV today. Twenty-two million men, women and children have died already, and 15,000 people are infected every day. If current trends do not change, there will be more than 40 million AIDS orphans in Africa alone by 2010. In Nigeria about 4 percent (of population of 120 million) is infected with HIV/AIDS.

CGHHR is advocating for the Nigerian government commitment to AIDS treatment and prevention. Through petitions and campaigns CGHHR has helped bring the issue of the price of anti-retroviral medications before policy makers.

 

Program objectives:

To provide national and regional advocacy and education effort to stop the HIV/AIDS scourge;

To encourage the Nigerian government to increase its financial commitment to fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases;

To assist HIV/AIDS patients get the needed medical care and medication;

To provide detailed research and information on the prevalence of the disease and the disease combating measures and connection between human rights and AIDS; and

To develop opportunities for adequate medical access to health care practitioners by creating the medical professional alliance with CGHHR to assist HIV/AIDS patients.

 

3. Womens  Social and Economic  Equality Program

The WSEEP program seeks to establish a gender-equitable society in Nigeria which is just, non-discriminatory and where women and men from all background are empowered and are able to contribute equally in the mainstream development process and able to exercise their rights, define and articulate their interests and needs in public policy.

Program objectives:

To work for the empowerment and advancement of women through better opportunities of education, gainful and equal employment, economic, political and legal empowerment, gender equality and an equitable share in decision making and for their full participation  in all spheres of society;

To promote and propagate the principles and provisions of International Human Rights Instruments, Beijing Platform for Action, CEDAW, CRC, non-discrimination, equality, social justice, rule of law;

To work for legislative reforms and influence the legislative reforms and official policies on promotion and protection of human rights, interests of children and women, gender equality, womens empowerment and gender-equitable development;

To raise womens consciousness about the social, cultural, economic, religious and legal injustices, gender issues and discrimination against them and develop their consciousness, self-confidence and esteem through training, discussions, workshops, publications, awareness raising and leadership development programmes;

To advocate and monitor gender representation and balance in national programmes, policies and processes. To contribute to the institutionalisation of gender perspectives in major national development programmes; 

To promote womens rights to health and reproductive rights; and

To investigate and develop the ways in which the human rights framework and human rights instruments can be used to promote womens economic, social and cultural rights in sub-Saharan Africa.

 

4. Human Right to Health Program

The  NCGHHRs Human Rights to Health Program  is the core aspect of  our  mission. NCGHHR promote the health interest of human rights agenda and believe that promotion and protection of human rights requires the promotion and protection of the health of the people. 

 

Program Objectives:

To advocate and develop network for universal health care in Nigeria;

To campaign for the establishment of basic health infrastructures, monitoring and planning systems;

To strengthen basic health-care services for children in the context of primary health-care delivery, including prenatal care, breast-feeding, immunization and nutrition program;

To research and analyze health services in terms of need and objectives and evaluate the scope, standard and geographical coverage;

To build a rigorous block of committed proponents and increase political prominence of the issue of health care reform;

To support of education and training programs for all health workers;

To support the use and strengthening of mechanisms that improve coordination between health and related sectors at all appropriate levels of government, and in communities and relevant organizations;

To advocate for the development and strengthening of the primary health care system, that is practical, community-based, scientifically sound, socially acceptable and appropriate to peoples need and that meet basic health needs for clean water, safe food and sanitation;

To promote and strengthen community-based rehabilitation activities for the rural handicapped; and

To strengthen services for youth in health, education and social sectors in order to provide better information, education, counseling and treatment for specific health problems, including drug abuse; HIV/AIDS; female genital mutilation; malaria, etc

 

5. Child Rights Program

The NCGHHR Child Rights Project aim at creating awareness of the       fundamental rights of the child and redressing perceived infraction of these rights AND to provide leadership in the development of legal protection of rights of the child in Nigeria.

Program Objectives:

To investigate, collate and publish incidents of abuses of the rights of infants, children and young persons;

To encourage the discussion of problems relating to the rights of infants, children and young persons;

To create awareness of the rights of infants as enshrined in United Nations CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD, The regional human rights instruments and the Constitutions of States;

To promote and encourage the enforcement of the rights enshrined in aforesaid instruments by infants, children and young persons; and

To cooperate, liaise and enters into any arrangement with any association or agency engaged in activities similar to the ideals of this organization and to endow or establish any program aimed at educating and uplifting the living standards of the infants, children and young persons worldwide.

 

6. Anti-Human Trafficking Program

 

This is a new NCGHHR program. The Anti-Human Rights Project is coordinated by the Coalition Against Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children (CAHTSEC). CAHTSEC recently merged with NCGHHR for effective advocacy on human trafficking of women and children, child labor, child slavery, and child prostitution.

 

 

  Program Objectives

 

To actively investigate, assist in the prosecution, and punishment of those involved in the trafficking of persons in countries of origin and destination, and imposing penalties appropriate for the grave nature of the abuses they have committed by the State authorities;

 

To exempt trafficking victims from prosecution for any immigration violations or other offenses that have occurred as a result of their being trafficked;

 

To advocate for the implementation of the Trafficking Protocol and the enactment of national legislation that will include human rights protection for trafficked persons;

 

To make combating trafficking a priority and put the protection of the trafficked person at the center of all anti-trafficking policies; and

 

To ensure that trafficking victims have the opportunity to seek remedies and redress for the human rights violations they have suffered, including compensation for damages, unpaid wages, and restitution. This requires guaranteeing victims' access to legal assistance, interpretation services, and information regarding their rights, and allowing all trafficked persons to remain in the country during the duration of any proceedings related to legal claims they have filed.
